Do you counsel children?

Yes, we do. Children have a special place in our hearts. They are our future and they are worthy of being invested in.

Am I allowed to bring my children to my therapy sessions?

While it is not recommended, we understand that life requires flexibility. We will not deny services to you, however, we will individualize therapy with the presence of your children in mind.

Do you offer therapy over the phone or video?

Yes! We offer teletherapy services for our clients. Our client portal is HIPAA-compliant and secure. Telehealth is typically performed over video and it isn't recommended that therapy be performed with voice-only communication. We also request that you try and limit outside distractions as much as possible. This will greatly help your session and allow for honest dialogue between you and your counselor.

Do you offer couples counseling?

Yes, we offer couples counseling and prefer the Gottman Method. The Gottman Method focuses on methods necessary to maintain the fondness and respect between couples for one another and teaches tools so that when hurtful actions or words occur, we are able to diffuse the situation.

Do you keep what happens in therapy session confidential?

All therapists are required legally and ethically to maintain confidentiality with their clients. There are a few exceptions when we cannot maintain confidentiality: reporting child abuse, adult dependent abuse, and elderly abuse.

Also, if someone is actively suicidal or homicidal therapists are allowed, and in some cases mandated by law, to act to ensure the safety of our clients or others.

Other than those exceptions sessions are confidential.

How long in a typical therapy session?

Most therapy sessions are 53 minutes of face-to-face time. The amount of time can be tailored to fit the client's needs and the situation.

What does the first session look like?

This is an excellent question! If your intake paperwork is not completed before your session is set to begin, you and your counselor will take some time to complete the intake paperwork prior to continuing the session.

After this, you and your counselor will begin to get to know each other.  One of the strongest predictors of successful therapy is the relationship between the client and the counselor.

You will initially discuss what brought you to therapy and some of your goals to start working on during the upcoming sessions.

How many sessions do I need with a therapist?

The answer to this question is purely up to you.  As previously mentioned, you are the tea master of your life and your therapy sessions. Therapy is very much dependent on each individual and the goals they are interested in achieving.

Some desire short-term goals, which could be achieved in 6-12 sessions, while others are wanting to accomplish some long-term goals which could last a year or more.

Also, it is most important to note that your journey is up to you and your effort to implement the new tools and behaviors discussed with your counselor and ultimately make the change that you want to see.

How much does a session cost?

If you have insurance, then your cost depends on the copay or co-insurance that is set by your insurance company. We will run your benefits prior to your first appointment as a courtesy. If you do not have insurance, our self-pay rate, after a 20% discount, is $200 for the initial intake, a 60-minute psychotherapy session is $160, a 45-minute psychotherapy session is $140, and a 30-minute psychotherapy session is $120. We do have payment plans and session packages are available. Please give our office a call if you are interested in either.

Do you prescribe medication?

At this time we do not prescribe medication at Tea & Empathy Counseling. However, we are actively working to be able to offer this service to our clients.

The questions listed are not an exhaustive list, if you have any questions we did not answer above, please don’t hesitate to reach out and give us a call. We would be happy to answer any questions you have regarding therapy, insurance, or other questions about your journey through healing.
